the foundation of the project. Luckily for us, most of our work is happening inside a cabin that is only going to get wet if something goes wrong. So, MDF is widely used for enclosures and panels with no compromise of quality. A variety of other materials can be used
if moisture or serviceability are a concern. Baltic birch or marine grade plywood are widely used, and a variety of composite materials, such as ABS plastic, PVC, HDPE and acrylic, can be used for substructure components and are relatively easy to obtain and work with. However, the best choice for building a solid and long-lasting foundation is a metal substructure. Steel or aluminum provide for a foundation that is nearly impervious to the environment and will last for the life of the vehicle. Because these can be engineered to use less materi- als for a stronger foundation, there is often a net loss of weight when they are used.
Te Rule of Tirds The rule of thirds is a principle that is normally applied to art and photogra- phy, but it’s a very powerful aid during the layout phase. The rule of thirds is a guideline that states that an image should be divided into nine equal parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines (think of the grid on your camera screen). The sub- ject should align with these lines or their intersections to create more energy and interest than simply centering the subject. This same principle can be applied
to our layout, creating a more dynamic effect. It can be used to determine where we will place our belt line on a panel, or where to incorporate a design element. Any time there is a question about where to place a component or element in a design, consider the rule of thirds for a quick answer. µ
