Combining High, Low Technology The technology being created to improve user connectivity and vehicle security might not reach new customers unless dealers find effective ways to show the products and inform the customers about them. “In our experience, dealers who pro- vide some type of interactive experience for their customers have a 100 percent increased chance of closing a sale. Apple stores have one of the strongest retail experiences that is completely predicated on the customer interacting and touching the product,” Lee said. “We advise dealers to offer a similar experience for their cus- tomer, whether it’s by offering some type of interactive display kiosk or by doing a good old-fashioned demonstration.” In addition to having equipment on

display, Miller suggests posting a You- Tube video showing how to use the equipment. “A lot of people who don’t know much about it might be afraid of it. Law enforcement and the military use it; those are just a few examples. But you need to break it down so everyone can relate and understand the benefits. Retailers should make sure they are able to educate the customer.” Miller sees future devices being able to

transmit messages, mapping, and video as well. “Right now, everything is at 3G tech- nology, but it will go up to the next level,” he said, adding that “4G technology would open up more possibilities. As the phone technology grows, so will this industry. Everything revolves around the mobile phone; we’re using it to do everything.” “Exposure to a device’s capability and to its

valuable usable features should be increased for the consumer,” Malone said. “Consum- ers need more awareness, and more retailers need to come on board promoting telematics devices in the connected car.” Malone is also looking to drive sales by building in a CRM (customer relationship management) capability. “This feature, whether in an old or new device, would send information to the dealer when you need to change the oil or any other service. The dealer is more connected to you,” he said. “An ecosystem would be built around the device, allowing the dealer to build a one-to-one relationship with you and your vehicle.” 
