espite the commoditization of vehicle security and its basic inclusion in just about every new vehicle, theft of and from cars is still alive and well. Accord- ing to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR)


Program, there were an estimated 721,053 thefts of motor vehi- cles nationwide in 2012, an increase when compared with 2011 estimates. More than $4.3 billion was lost nationwide to motor vehicle thefts in 2012, with the average dollar loss per stolen vehicle totaling around $6,019.

The war against vehicle theft goes on, but now the weapons are different. Unlike during the heyday of aftermarket security, when companies focused on siren sounds, code hopping and ultrasonic sensors, today’s technological advancements combine a measure of convenience with systems that provide the user with detailed security data. And the product field has grown as well: The ability to integrate into vehicle networks to access lights, door locks and entry points with a single connection saves time and money.
