The Club is constantly fi nding new ways to be involved in activities that benefi t both our local communities, and also in

the international arena.

We have recently reached the fi nal stage by choosing a candidate from the Blantyre area of Malawi to come to Stirling University for one year on a fully funded scholarship to undertake a Masters Degree in Health Research (MRes Health Research).

The

successful candidate will study the most up to date techniques and practices relating to childbirth and associated medical problems. Death levels for mothers during or after childbirth are many times more prevalent in Malawi than in Scotland.

This project will be funded by a Global Grant from Rotary funds, and has had to pass very stringent rules in order to qualify.

Two of our members, along with the head of

department at the University, will shortly be going out to Malawi to meet the successful candidate, and members of the local Rotary Club (Limbe) in Blantyre. The selection of the candidate was fi nalised by Skype, with members of both clubs being involved in the process.

Another member of our Rotary “family”, Morven Craib from the Interact Club at Queen Victoria School, has just returned from a fi ve day trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg as a “Euroscola”. She was chosen from a number of potential delegates to go to Strasburg as a member of the Scottish group of 26 students and joined with over 400 other students from across the EU.

Apart from visiting the European Parliament, and asking MEPs questions, they also had to complete a number of tasks including a street survey. What made this more challenging was that she and the rest of the group had to carry out the interviews in French!!
