The Dunblane-Likhubula Partnership - Still Making A Diff erence Ten Years On
For more than 150 years Scots have had close contact with the people of Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) building on a legacy created by the missionary, explorer and anti-slavery campaigner David Livingstone. That unique relationship today fi nds expression through hundreds of Scottish organisations, schools, churches and community groups that have links with Malawi.
The Dunblane-Likhubula Partnership was established in 2004 to link Dunblane and the village of Likhubula situated high up in the Mulanje mountain massif in the tea-growing area of Malawi about 40 miles south-west of Blantyre.
In the early years of the Partnership our support focused on projects to provide clean water and food in Likhubula. New wells and a water distribution system led to a large decrease in water-borne disease and improved irrigation allowed increased food production. With the support of Mary’s Meals, a daily meal was provided for children at Nansato primary school - over one hundred children returned to school in the week this was introduced, their parents deciding it was better for them to attend school and be fed than spend the day foraging for food. Today Nansato has around 1400 pupils compared with the 1000 or so when Dunblane fi rst brought Mary’s Meals to the school. Our most recent project for new toilets at the school is due to complete in May.
With the very active assistance of pupils from Dunblane High School, the Dunblane-Likhubula Partnership provides Bursaries for children whose families cannot aff ord to send them to Chambe Secondary School. Our long-term commitment is to support 20 secondary school students each year. Two of our Bursary students

For the future our aim is to continue making a diff erence, building on our special friendships and active links with Malawi to create a programme of practical support activities for the benefi t of the Likhubula community as a whole.
