IN MY VIEW I’ve Started So I Will Finish

IN THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF NEW AND REGULAR PEOPLE PROFILES,SPN SPOKE WITHBOB BAYLIS, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CHEMICAL DOSING COMPANY ETATRON GB ABOUT HIS CAREER, WORKING WITHIN THE WET LEISURE INDUSTRY AND WHAT HE REALLY ENJOYS IN HIS SPARE TIME

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE WET LEISURE INDUSTRY? Having completed a successful career in the Royal Air Force I went into project management in the public sector which was booooring! I then found myself looking for something different and a technical sales position became available involving the supply of Etatron dosing pumps and equipment. Thereafter I suppose the saying is “the rest is history!”If you are unable to attend the exhibitions, there

WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT ROLE/ POSITION? Now I am the Managing Director of Etatron GB.

WHAT’S THE MOST ENJOYABLE ASPECT TO YOUR JOB? The very varied nature of the work, one minute I am looking at sales figures, budgets and strategies, the next I am making the tea!

AND WHAT’S THE LEAST? None really, you have you take the positives out of negative situations. A good friend of mine recently died which was a salutary remainder that we are not immortal. Make the most of what you have and get on with it – we are all on borrowed time.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR BIGGEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Difficult one to answer that given that I am now in my 50’s with a military career in the background. However a key highlight of last year was being presented to Princess Anne during her royal visit to Lindum Business Park in celebration

to Blundell Park in 1979 whilst based in Lincolnshire at RAF Binbrook. The memories I have of the good and bad times of following GTFC are many and varied.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU DID NOT DO AND NO LONGER WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY? During my RAF career from 1977 to 2000 as an engineer I worked on many different types of aircraft, Harrier, Jaguar, Lightning, Nimrod and Tornado to list some. But I never got the chance to work on the Vulcan Bomber, an iconic aircraft of the Cold War and of course that now will never happen.

WHAT DO THE NEXT 12 MONTHS HOLD IN STORE FOR YOU WORK WISE? I take pride that we are a business contributing to our economy. We are looking to employ more staff in Sales and Logistics as we grow.

and recognition of being one of the successful businesses on the site in Lincoln.

AND YOUR BIGGEST PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT? Running the London Marathon last year at age 53! I can say the pain of the last 6 miles was incredible but the atmosphere was tremendous.

WHEN NOT WORKING, WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN HOBBIES AND INTERESTS?

My running days are over, not physically but mentally! If ever you find me running (on a treadmill) you have my permission to shoot me! I am now getting into cycling and looking forward to doing the Coast to Coast ride in April over a 24 hour period. I also have a goal to cycle from the Etatron office in Lincoln to Head Office in Rome... watch this space!

My other passion is Grimsby Town Football Club. I started going

92 February 2014 SPN

AND PERSONAL WISE? Keep fit and healthy, watch my beloved Grimsby Town FC get promotion this season, carrying on working hard to grow Etatron GB and make sure Mrs B gets some sunshine holidays!

WHAT PIECE OF BUSINESS ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AS A KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS? Just do it! Where there is a will there is a way… Last of all “Turnover is vanity, profitability is sanity!”

WHO IS THE ONE PERSON YOU WOULD MOST WANT TO MEET? Deborah Meaden, the successful entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den star. I would love to share with her my business experiences and ideas. Also she just might want to invest in us!

WHO IS THE ONE PERSON NO LONGER WITH US YOU WOULD HAVE WANTED TO MEET? There are many people I could mention and I guess top of the list would be Bobby Moore, a footballing great and childhood hero! During my RAF career I was fortunate enough to meet Margaret Thatcher and Diana the then Princess of Wales, both were memorable events. SPN
