Providing A Personal Service In Yorkshire And The North East

throughout Yorkshire and the North East for well over a quarter of a century.

The business was started back in the early 1970s by Bryan’s father Gordon, building kit and outdoor liner pools. After leaving college Bryan worked alongside his father acquiring and honing his trade and after a number of years working together – and in the time honoured secession of any family run business – Bryan took over control after Gordon passed away. Starting as a youngster in the business, Bryan is a second-generation pool builder, at the moment it doesn’t look as though there will be a third as his children have followed their own paths. Seeing your father returning home from building pools in the cold, wet and miserable British weather, with your job consisting of muddy holes and building materials has not sparked a pool builder ambition, but Bryan’s passion for the business is still the driving force with a team who enthusiastically support and assist his efforts. The company, which now boasts a ten person strong team including four pool engineers, three pool builders and service manager, Steve, who assists Bryan in the everyday running and delivery of the business. The team is completed by Carol, who runs the office. The Lennox Leisure team have worked for the company for at least ten years which Bryan feels adds stability to his business.

When first asked to provide a few words for an earlier edition of SPN, at the time it seemed as though it couldn’t

be a simpler task for Bryan. Work was steady, with enough to keep them going through Christmas and beyond. Then ‘very’ suddenly his wife, Carol, left him for a younger man, ‘their grandson Wilf’ as their daughter Anna gave birth to their first grandchild three weeks earlier than expected weighing in at a little over the weight of half a tub of chlorine! This event, of course took top priority, and work was temporarily put on hold.

One of the things Bryan enjoys most about his type of work is the people he comes into regular contact with, with their big personalities, and in particular their stories of how they came to be involved with swimming pools. He wonders if any school leaver has ever visited their careers advisor and stated their ambition is to build pools? He doubts it! Lennox Leisure primarily build indoor domestic pools but have been busy taking on outdoor refurbishments, which they feel is down to the good summer that we experienced. With two outdoor pools being built this year, Bryan feels this is a great sign for the future as he cannot remember the last time his company built that number in one year. Commercial work is taken on within the local area which includes schools,

health clubs, hotels and local authority work. Certikin International is their biggest supplier for pool equipment (including Roldeck covers and Calorex AHUs), with other products being supplied by Astralpool UK (including Heatstar AHUs), Plastica and SCP. Complete Pool Controls supplies Lennox Leisure with most of their pool chemicals.

Lennox Leisure have been a SPATA member since 1982; Bryan feels that it is vitally important to be a member of a Trade Association, as it sets the standards for the industry. The exchange of ideas between other members and the weekly newsletter (sent via email) is a useful way of communicating and sharing knowledge. A big supporter of SPATEX, Bryan and his team will be visiting the annual trade show and are looking forward to experiencing the new venue at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. “Visiting the show is a great way of putting a face to the people that you do day to day business with and I always leave the show taking away at least one good idea to take back to the business,” quoted Bryan. As usual, Bryan will also be attending the Awards evening which takes place during the exhibition on Sunday 2nd February. As a previous winner of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, Bryan feels it is imperative that SPATA members are recognised for their quality of work and believes that honouring reputable swimming pool installers is a positive step forward in promoting the wet leisure industry, and it’s future!
