Alumna Named Massachusetts Teacher of the Year
THE MASSACHuSETTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR for 2013-2014 is Anne Marie Bettencourt, G’06, an English teacher at Springfield Central High School. Bettencourt, 31, of Hatfield, Mass., received the award at a luncheon and ceremony given by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in June. She earned a master’s degree in education from Springfield College and a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University. Her supervisor for her student teaching experience, associate professor of education Dan Zuckergood
EdD, said “Her journals for her student teaching experience were awesome and I said that, between her journals and my responses, we had a book here. I then realized that maybe we did have a book here and she and I sent in a proposal to [book publisher] Prentice Hall.” Three weeks later, they did, in fact, have a book deal and went on to write Teaching in the Real World:
Strategies to Survive and Thrive, published in 2009. “She is an incredible teacher,” said Zuckergood. “Her students love her passion and commitment to them. She is a tough teacher and demands much from them. She certainly deserves the award.”
