THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX Firefly was once again responsible for the lighting design at this year’s Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, which took place in The Farmiloe Building, Clerkenwell, London. The design centred on a ‘whitebox’ theme, com- prising five bar spaces, each designed by a different team of previous winners. All the installed units, bars and stage were white. Each of the spaces required a different lighting solution. The entrance corridor fea- tured cool-white glowing boxes positioned randomly, that contrasted from the warm street lighting outside. The triple -height atrium space, where the final awards were presented were purposefully dark to give impact to the stage lighting and the huge projection screen. Each stage area was lit by a large ‘UFO’ hanging above which produced a column of light to highlight the winners receiving their awards. Next to each stage was a white box which doubled as both a beacon of light and as a projector screen on which the shortlisted and winning projects were shown.

LED Light Sheet was used for the glowing bar tops, the illumination of the graph- ic archways and the lit seating features. Designers of Box One, Estudio Nomada, specified shaped pieces of LED Light Sheet that slotted together to form giant grids which were then suspended as lamps. Elsewhere, custom pendants, backlit walls and shining ‘ribs’ of light added to the experience.

TRINITY COLLAGE BDP has provided lighting design for the Chapman Taylor designed Trinity Leeds retail scheme. The centrepiece of Trinity is a spectacular sweeping glass roof that undu- lates gently over the entire mall and gives the development an instantly recognisable, iconic feature. In order to light the roof, nodes made by StudioTech were mounted on to a custom made RGB LED acrylic stem that protruded by up to 200mm. The longest stems cluster in the centre of the main roof and then reduce down to points as they disperse out down the arcade roofs. Having nearly 1000 RGB LED nodes was a feature in itself but by adding the stem element, the coloured light also spills on to the immedi- ately surrounding white painted steelwork which cumulatively results in a glowing roof. www.bdp.com/services/lighting/
