THE WORLD’S A STAGE

The impressive new National Theatre of Bahrain in Manama boasts an innovative external lighting scheme from Havells - Sylvania.

Consisting of a 1001-seat auditorium the theatre, which opened in 2012, has been created for drama, dance, opera, concerts and conferences. Designed by AS.Architecture-Studio, France, the building also houses a 150-seat flexible studio theatre.

The 17,000m brise-soleil structure is formed of woven perforated sheets of aluminium attached to aluminium beams and supported on slender steel columns. Hidden inside each of the beams are Sylvania’s Sylfog luminaires, which create striking shadows throughout the night and are reflected onto the nearby lagoons. The all glass wall assembly is the first in the Middle East to feature glass fins devoid of all visible fixings, offering a completely

concealed assembly that enhances the aesthetics of the building. “There were a number of specific requirements for this project” comments Fakhruddin Golwala, regional sales manager ME at Havells-Sylvania. “The luminaire needed to be suitable to fit inside the aluminium beam and there also needed to be a full 180 degree illumination. There were also environmental conditions to consider; the luminaire needed to withstand high ambient temperature as it is exposed to the sun and has high ingress protection due to the site being so close to the sea. Due to the positioning of the luminaires they also needed to offer a virtually maintenance free solution and for these reasons the Sylvania Sylfog was chosen as

the perfect option.”

Sylvania supplied 1,920 Sylvania Slyfog R-POP 2 luminaires for the theatre in two different lamp configurations, 28W and 35W T5 options. The Sylvania Sylfog is an easily installed and maintained luminaire making it the ideal choice for the unique requirements of the theatre’s exterior canopy. The lamp is quickly changed via a spring loaded socket and connecting the mains is easily with a standard plug-in terminal. Featuring an electronic ballast, the Sylfog has a standard beam angle of 180 degrees with 84% LOR. A 360 degree light output is available on request, which uses a transparent gear tray, and was ordered specifically for this project. www.havells-sylvania.com
