COMMUNITY
HIVE IN ACTION – HELPING YOU TO RELOCATE
One of the main roles of RAF HIVE Information Officers is to provide information support to Personnel and families who are on the move. Here Vron Wootton, Debbie Tulip and Pam Brain share their work on the relocations going on in Scotland.
R
AF HIVE staff will always work to try and assist personnel and families to minimise the stress and
uncertainty that moves inevitably bring. Number 6 and Number 1(Fighter) Squadrons are scheduled to relocate to RAF Lossiemouth during the Summer of 2014, at which point the remainder of RAF Leuchars will transition to Army control with Army personnel expected to arrive at Leuchars during the Spring/Summer 2015.
So there is a fair amount of change on the horizon for some RAF personnel and their families working in Scotland. The HIVE Information Offices are integral to the work undertaken by Community Support Teams at both Stations as work gets underway to assist with all the practicalities of supporting the personnel and families involved and answering the queries.
As part of the network of HIVEs in the UK and Overseas, Vron Wootton, Debbie Tulip

and Pam Brain, the RAF Leuchars, RAF Lossiemouth and Elgin HIVE Information Officers respectively, work closely when dealing with customer enquiries and providing support to the service communities in their area. And it is an added bonus that all three have lived in Morayshire for some considerable time and have a wealth of local knowledge between them on which to draw.
One of the biggest concerns for families is the availability of school places. To ensure Moray Council is aware of the number of serving personnel and family members moving to RAF Lossiemouth and to help them plan their local services accordingly, the Community Development officer at RAF Leuchars, Susan Budd, will be providing Moray Council with the findings of a survey sent to all the serving personnel at RAF Leuchars requesting information about schooling and the use of local youth groups, clubs.
Pam, Debbie, and Flight Sergeant Marty Latham, the RAF Lossiemouth Service
Community Support Officer (SCSO), joined Vron at the RAF Leuchars Families Day providing the steady stream of visitors to their stand with information about facilities, education and housing provision in Elgin and Lossiemouth.
In the Autumn, presentations will begin for Service personnel and their families on the provision of education and housing and will include additional information from the RAF Leuchars and Lossiemouth Community Support Teams, the Local Fife Education Officer and the Scottish DIO Housing Manager.
The HIVEs of course provide information to anyone who is posted, so do make it a first point of call to find out, not only information about a particular unit and its facilities but also schools, further education, housing, healthcare facilities, employment and training opportunities. Whatever the question RAF HIVE will do its utmost to help.
