THE RAF SUPPORTING THE FAMILIES OF THOSE

DEPLOYED by Sqn Ldr Caroline Costello of RAF Community Support

When Service Personnel deploy on operations they are supported by a network of welfare facilities, such as fitness equipment, BFPO mail and the use of satellite phones or free telephone. Looking after Service personnel on operations is vital to the success of the job. However, families left behind are just as important to the success of operations, and the Serving person needs to know that their family is looked after whilst they are away.

C

learly, not all the support available will be wanted by all families, but knowing there are people to talk to

and activities to get involved in, is an important of coping with separation.

Units provide a range of support to families when their loved one is deployed and much of this is paid for from the Families Welfare Grant or FWG. A Unit is able to claim £4.40 per week for each Service person deployed from

their unit. Units will accumulate this money to make it available to pay specifically for facilities and events for the families of those deployed Service personnel.

There is in place guidance as to how this money can be spent, but it is the Unit’s decision on which ideas are best suited to their Service families. Each Unit has a differing number of personnel deploying and consequently, Units will vary in their methods of spending the funding.
