YOU AND THE RAF
daily life. We are looking at how careers are managed with an aim to reduce the frequency of moves from one place to another and, for some, extending posting length. We are also considering how we might offer a limited period of part-time working. Our work on training is looking at ways in which we can reduce time spent away from home to attend courses by introducing new ways in which to deliver the training for instance via distance learning or at regional centres.
Finally, I want to mention our work to help support spouses and partners in finding employment. The current, very mobile nature of the job can make it very difficult for spouses and partners to find employment or maintain rewarding careers. We are exploring ways in which we can address this problem and very much welcome feedback from families during our consultation to help us with this.
We must get the design of the NEM right – not just in terms of ensuring value for money for Defence but crucially in delivering a package that fits with what Service personnel and their families want. Feedback from Service personnel and their families will help us decide on the way
forward. We conducted consultation last year, and have access to feedback from the Armed Forces and Families’ Continuous Attitude annual surveys, but there are gaps in our knowledge and a number of areas we want to explore.
We launched our consultation in June and it will run into October. For the RAF this has included roadshows at key units across the country (including at Shawbury, Cosford, Leeming, Conningsby, Cranwell, Lossiemouth and Brize Norton), focus groups, and paired interviews with Service personnel and their spouse/partner. In addition we have an online survey running which can be accessed via our
gov.uk page seeking views on the main aims of the NEM. Whilst the survey is intended to be completed by Service personnel we would strongly encourage them to complete it in partnership with their families. The survey is hosted on the internet so does not require access to MoD systems. In addition we will be running some targeted surveys on specific aspects of the NEM later in the year.
This is a really important opportunity for RAF personnel, and their families, to give us their views on the NEM. We look forward to letting you know later in the year what we are doing with the feedback you give us.
Further information on the NEM can be found via the NEM
gov.uk pages and in Defence Internal Brief 2013DIB37 published on 20 Jun 13.
