Edo was largely a watery marshland that was filled about 400 years ago.The Nihombashi area, which prospered as a town of merchants, still serves as a base point of commerce and finance.

The Soto School temple was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612. It is known as the burial ground of the FortySeven Loyal Retainers. There are a bronze statue of Oishi Kuranosuke and graves of the loyal retainers.

This area, which was filled with forms of entertainment such as Kabuki and puppet shows was given its name due to its large population of puppeteers.

Shinagawa-ura and the houseboats have been chosen by the residents as 2 of the 100 sights of this town. The jetty for fishing boats and houseboats allows Shinagawa to still retain its old fishing town atmosphere.

This shrine, which is known for its deity of the safe delivery of children, attracts many female worshippers during temple festivals. Scheduled to be temporarily relocated next to the Mei j i z a Thea t er due t o renovations as of March 1, 2013.

The first post station on the Tokaido road, which used to be an important road that connected Edo and Kamigata. Today, it is still the same width as it was during the Edo era. The road is dotted with shrines and temples, including Honsenji Temple, which was built about 1,200 years ago. There are plenty of attractions including the Shukuba Festival in late September.

6 Yagenbori Fudo Temple


One of the three great Fudo temples of Edo, said to have been built in 1585 and depicted in "Collection of Pictures of Noted Places in Edo".
