Okura Museum of Art 大倉集古館


This is Japan’ MAP P29 [A-1] ・P33 [A-4] s first private museum and it has many Japanese and Asian paintings,


sculptures and calligraphy. The National Treasure, the Samantabhadra on an Elephant, is especially renowed worldwide.

The oldest temple in Tokyo said to have been built in 628. It is famous for its main Kaminari-mon Gate, where a giant lantern hangs. One of the three great Edo festivals, the “Sanja Festival”, which is held at Asakusa Jinja Shrine attracts over 1.5 million people a year from both across Japan and abroad.

The museum has a huge collection of works of art such as paintings, sculptures, plastic arts and a variety of other artistic works. The collection introduces the history of modern Japanese art.

The permanent exhibitions introduce approximately 2,900 modern art items of ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, glass works, wooden crafts, bamboo crafts and metal works. The building is also designated as an Important Cultural Property.

5 Denbouin Street 伝法院通り MAP P2 1 B-2、 B-3


This street, which runs two hundred meters from East to West, is fi lled with the culture of Edo. Downtown souvenirs such as Japanese accessories and sweet amanatto beans and skillfully made crafts can be found here. The various sights to see include a statue of a famous thief on the roof of a garment shop, the colorful roof tiles, and the eight faces of Edo drawn on the shutters.
