Hama-rikyu Gardens 浜離宮恩賜庭園

Gardens of the Tokugawa Shogun family representing the Edo era, famous for its “Shioiri-no-Ike” pond and two duck ponds. The Shioiri pond is designed to feature a landscape that changes along with the ebb and low of the tides. These are the only tidewater ponds which still remain in Tokyo.

Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens 旧芝離宮恩賜庭園

One of the oldest Daimyo gardens dating back to the beginning of the Edo era. It is a Japanese-style garden with ancient rockwork and a pond that used to be con-nected with the sea. It is a traditional Japanese garden of “a landscape style with artifi cial hills and fountains”.

Kiyosumi Gardens 清澄庭園


A representative garden from the Meiji era, with its big fountain in close proximity, a miniature hill, a dry garden, and many oddly shaped rocks and famous rare stones collected from all over the country. It is a traditional Japanese garden of “a landscape style with artifi cial hills and fountains”.

Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens 小石川後楽園


This is a typical Mito-Tokugawa Daimyo garden of the Edo era. The beautiful balance between Japanese and Chinese aesthetics can be seen in the scenery that expresses the oceans, rivers, mountains, and fi elds.

Rikugien Gardens 六義園


A typical Daimyo garden dating back to the Edo era. A traditional Japanese garden of


“a landscape style with artifi cial hills and fountains”, exquisite with the tastes of Waka- Japanese classical poetry. The garden was constructed by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu.

Designated in 1873 as the fi rst park in Japan. Located throughout the huge grounds, which are famous for viewing cherry blossoms, are a zoo, an art gallery, museums, and more. Two new cafés have recently opened to let visitors relax while enjoying the nature during breaks from strolls.

3 Toshogu Shrine 東照宮

The old shrine, established in 458, enshrines Sugawara Michizane, the God of Learning. There are about 300 Japanese plum trees in the precincts that were planted in connection with Sugawara Michizane. The Shaden architecture, entirely constructed with Japanese cypress in 1995, is a must-see.

6 Yanakaginza 谷中銀座 MAP P25 A-1


Although it is along the Yamanote Line, this shopping street in the Yanesen area preserves its old and nostalgic downtown atmosphere. It is crowded with people of both genders young and old, as there is everything from old established shops still standing since the Taisho era to modern sweets shops. The evening view seen from the great Yuyake Dandan staircase is beautiful.

26 Shinagawa Ota Shibamata


The Eastern Tama Area

Built in 1625 by the Tokugawa shogunate as a prayer temple. It later also served as a family temple and entombed here are six former shoguns. The Konpon Chudo (main hall), the Kaisando, the Kiyomizu Kannondo, and the Shinobazu-no-ike Bentendo are among the structures that are located near Ueno Park.


Ikebukuro Nihombashi Marunouchi MAP P25 C-2


Built in 1627 upon request by Ieyasu Tokugawa in his will. Interred here are Ieyasu, Yoshimune, and Yoshinobu Tokugawa. Full of sights to see, including the historically valuable main hall, the grand stone gate, and the monstrous stone lantern.
