“I am a young mother and therefore cannot work. Even if our children were old enough to look after themselves, my husband’s job is extremely unpredictable and I wouldn’t last long in a job where I would have to call in to pick them up from schools. Our families’ quarter is lovely but quality comes at a price, and with my husband’s wages close to that of a Tesco’s worker we cannot afford much after bills and living costs. This would be fine if working for the RAF was an easy one, but with the volume of work at home, regular detachments, mandatory fitness tests (which are now taken very seriously), force protection training, trade courses away from home, taking up secondary duties around camp to assist promotion, compulsory circuit training every other day, parades, helping out in the community, having to move home every few years, and exercises year round, our pay out doesn’t come close to the effort put in.”
“Not sure about other areas but in engineering we are starting to lag behind civil industry now.”
“I know the military do a difficult job, but they are well paid for it. Constant complaints about it undermine the military’s status with society generally, where pay restraint has been more draconian.”
“Increases in SFA, petrol, food, cost of living, giving a real term pay cut, but I also now have an increased workload due to redundancies, feel undervalued. The private sector now appears to be more attractive for TG1 personnel for pay and conditions”
“As a level 7 sergeant I cannot climb any higher in pay levels. In my branch, promotion has practically ceased so even with a glowing write up I cannot expect to get promoted or be paid any more. With no inflation pay rise from the previous 2 or 3 years and only 1% this year my pay is actually decreasing as the price of living continues to rise.”
“I understand the economic restraints that the Government are currently trying to manage, however, I feel as we are a rapidly shrinking sector, which, as a result directly raises our operational turnaround time and the work load at home, there could be more benefits provided.”
“Life if a constant struggle and being away from family adds to that. Knowing your family is financially stable reduces added stress when you are away.”
