“Would not mind paying more as long as we start to get treated as the tenants we are rather than squatters with no rights! “

“I would only agree to pay more if they were a good standard to live in!”

“I believe we still have a far better deal when it comes to rent in comparison to if we rented privately; however, I don’t know many private tenants who would be expected to live in houses with mould issues whilst the landlord fobs them off. Standards expected on march out never meet what you get on march in.”

“Give us a decent house to live in and we’ll pay a fair rate but why should we pay higher charges to live in a drafty, shoddy, old house.”

“I would definitely pay more for a better quality house.”

“Our MQ is nowhere near the standard of an ordinary rental property. Maintenance takes ages to be fixed and even then it tends to be quick fixes rather than looking at the bigger picture. The heating system is so inefficient; our bills are higher than they should be. Whenever questioned, you often get the ‘what do you expect for the rent you pay?’ reply. However, quarters are at a reduced rate to compensate for so many other sacrifices and this should not be allowed to be a valid response.”

“With plans to increase the charges anyway surely we should see an increase in quality of SFA. Whilst we do receive a lower rent in comparison to civilian rents, we cannot do anything to ‘make it our own’; less put your furniture in. You paint it and you need to paint it back. DIO, DE, HIS, or whatever they brand themselves are picky. We need a family officer (uniformed) at march ins/outs.”

“Most people are in SFA because of no other option. If they want to get people out of SFA then why not give a rental allowance so people can choose to live where they want? Increasing the charges is penalising those that also have no choice as to where they are located. Also an increase to charges would be justified if the quality/amenities and repair processes were improved but they are just getting worse.”

“Shouldn’t the standard of living accommodation be better irrespective of what is charged?”

“I already live in grade one accommodation so an improvement to the quarter would have no effect on me-they are fairly new private built leased accommodation. The continuing increase in accommodation charge is basically gouging money from a captive audience who has little or no say in where they live and how much they pay. Most people in the armed forces are not living where they wish to purchase a house or can simply not afford a deposit to purchase their own house.”

“That would depend on the improvements carried out. Not all ‘improvements’ make the standard of accommodation better. However for example if solar panels were fitted to provide cheaper energy costs then I would be happy for this to be paid for by an appropriate rise in charges.”
