“I feel basic pay is adequate, but too many of the ‘allowances’ do not compensate for the disrupti on of, for example, moving house, or of spending many short periods of temporary duty away from home.”
“We are classed as being in the middle class and with me being a student we struggle to pay childcare costs and are struggling to make ends meet. We get penalised because my husband’s earning more than £24000 but sti ll struggle as he is not on over £30000.”
“Good package for what we do.”
Although we did not ask specifi cally about technical pay, we were surprised (maybe we should not have been!) by the number of comments received about the comparability of basic pay between the technical and the non-technical trades within the RAF. These are typical examples:
“My husband, although in a highly skilled and technical job, gets the same pay as a secretary/admin assistant. Apparently his hand skills are comparable to a potato peeler. As a technician who can service complex aircraft , and drive, and do his own admin, and does security, he receives the same as a driver who cannot fi x aircraft or an admin assistant who also cannot fi x aircraft !”
“It just doesn’t seem to equate to any kind of system. Some trades seem to be paid well for what they do, while others seem not to be. A Technician doing 50 hours a week on a squadron gets paid the same as Personnel Support doing 37 hours with training days during the week, Technicians do more training and have more ranks to climb through, yet they get paid the same!”
