Summer MBA Convention A Success! Linda Huck, MBA President

The 45th Missouri Band Masters Summer Convention is now history, and it was a fabulous four days of music, fellowship, and food. If you were able to attend I hope you enjoyed the wide variety of concerts and clinics as well as some of the family-friendly offerings that were available. We had excellent attendance this year, and those who stayed through the end of the convention were treated to a free brunch and a fantastic clinic / performance by Jerry Hoover, Belva Prather, and students from Missouri State University. If you were unable to come, I hope you make plans now to attend next summer from June 22 – 25, 2014, at the Resort at Port Arrowhead for another wonderful convention. I would like to recognize the entire MBA Board of Directors: Denis Swope, Keith Ruether, Rob Nichols, Kurt Bauche, , and advisory board members Doug Hoover, Steve Litwiller, Cindy Svehla and Kim Hartley for their support and help in running the convention. Also thanks to all of our sponsors and exhibitors that helped to fund the convention events, and to the staff at Port Arrowhead for their great service.

Congratulations to Belva Prather and Skip Vandelicht, who were inducted into the Missouri Bandmasters Hall of Fame at the 2013 Summer Convention. Both of these master teachers have been a positive influence and an inspiration to so many students and colleagues throughout their careers, and it was an honor to be able to recognize them in this special way. Thanks Belva and Skip, for all you have done and all you will continue to

Fall 2013

do to inspire us to become better teachers!

Again this summer I had the opportunity to speak with many of you at the convention regarding your opinions on what to offer at future conferences. The MBA board of directors is always interested in hearing from our membership. If there is a clinician or a clinic topic that you would like to see presented at the MBA summer convention, please shoot me an email: lahuck@ farmington.k12.mo.us.

Just a reminder to all directors that the audition material for this year’s All-State auditions is SET II. Another reminder that scale requirements are posted on the MBA website and this format should be used by all students auditioning for the All-State Band. We will again have online pre-registration for All-State Band Auditions, which will be held Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri. Denis Swope is our President-Elect and All-State Coordinator for 2013-14. Please contact him with any questions you may have regarding the All- State audition process. His email is: dswope@columbia.k12.mo.us.

MBA would like to welcome Kim Hartley as the new vice president for Missouri Bandmasters!! Kim has been active in MBA as our calendar chair for the past two years. She will shadow our All State Coordinator during this year’s All State audition process and will become President Elect/ASB Coordinator in July 2014. Another reminder -- our online

pre-registration this year will also include All-State Jazz auditions in the registration process. MOAJE and MBA will use the same online pre-registration site for All-State auditions. This should make registration for both groups convenient for

those directors

registering students in both groups! The online pre-registration will open in mid October and close the week before Thanksgiving. More information regarding this process will appear on the MBA website during the fall months.
