30-minute session getting all of the trumpets to play the correct pitches on the intro of our first chart. It was humbling and very uncomfortable, but most of all, it was educational. Later that night, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval performed as the guest artist, some 12 hours after our 8 a.m. performance slot. We stayed the whole day and attended the concert. We got a lot better after that night and twenty years later, I still have some of those students tell me that they remember that concert as one of their favorite high school experiences.


I’ve always liked the saying that “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Here’s hoping that we can all share a few more of those moments with our students. Have a great year!
