COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY COLUMN...

Begin the Year Fresh Cheryl Cifelli, MMEA College/University Vice-president

The topic for this article is “going back to school.” My problem is that I have not left the last year behind yet! My university sponsors an international semester each fall, and this year just happens to be Italy. As a clarinet professor, I immediately recognized that the clarinet convention was also held in Assisi, Italy. Who could resist! I began to plan my trip to Italy. Needless to say my trip became a school trip where I took 10 students on an international tour for 15 days to experience Italy. As I write this I am still in Italy with those students and therefore am still finishing things that I began last year.

I began to recognize that if I wanted to begin the year fresh then I was going to have to readjust some thinking. I found myself contemplating things I had learned here while in Italy such as no Internet service, less than perfect air conditioners, and extremely hot weather (oh yeah, we have that!) I started to see things a little simpler. I watched how every person found time to have a gelato in the heat of the day. They took time to reward themselves and to take care of

themselves and it hit me. This trip was not a continuation of last year but my reward for my hard work. I started to notice that the students who were also on the trip were finding reward in the trip for themselves and I noticed how they began to change. Some of that was Italy but some was the fact that they felt rewarded and appreciated; that their hard work meant something.

It is important for us to remember that our students need

that

reward. It could be that first chair in orchestra or just a pat on the back but it is important. It lets them realize that you recognize their hard work. These students will work harder next year because of this experience and so will I. The reward was not just for them but for myself and has the same positive affect.

Through MMEA we want to reward our students as well, with an invitation to audition for the 2014 All-Collegiate Jazz Band. All auditions will be by CD and each college/university can send up to 4 auditions. Repertoire, plus a listing of audition material is located on the MMEA web site, www.mmea.

net. All CD auditions must come with the “Participant Form” which will include the director’s name as well as the email where you can be reached throughout the winter break. You can find this form on the website. All audition CDs must be mailed to the address below; postmarked no later than October 25, 2013. The auditions will be adjudicated and results sent out no later than November 15, 2013. All results will be communicated through the jazz directors.
