success of that event to other ideas and activities planned to enhance your students’ education. The more people invest in your program with time and service, the more visible your program will become not only to your school but your entire community. Just as drum majors do not lead from their title alone, neither do music teachers lead from their job descriptions. Unlike, any other teacher in your school, a music teacher has four to seven years to establish a network of community relationships. Music teachers can bring a diverse population of religions, race, socio-economic condition, and political preference and unite them as a symphony of volunteers to not only make the music educator more efficient and effective, but also can bring the community together by creating lifelong supporters of the ARTS.

Kansas City Metro District #3 has several programs utilizing strong groups of parents and student leaders. The District is constantly looking for opportunities to involve the community and increase participation of both parents and students. Allow yourself to be heard by communicating your needs to both your parents and students. Students need to be taught good leadership skills. As a music educator you have an amazing opportunity to not only expand your students’ perception of leadership but to also develop a community of parents who will help you become more effective in the classroom and more relaxed in your personal life.

WEST CENTRAL DISTRICT #4 Nathan Long, MMEA District President

The West Central District board is excited about the upcoming school year! The vice presidents are hard at work securing clinicians and organizing a wide range of musical opportunities for our students. Again this year will be online registration for all of our major events. The program, designed by our University of Central Missouri liaison Dr. Michael Sekelsky, allows directors to submit student information via our website at www.wcmmea. com. Once registered, the vice president will be able to access your student and school information to organize auditions and payment procedures. Though you will still have to either mail registration fees or bring them with you to the event, this should cut down on the amount of snail-mail and deadlines that can cause you stress. Please take time to bookmark the website as there will be more information to come.

In addition, our mentoring coordinator Steve Litwiller will be organizing a West Central District gathering at Hero’s in downtown Warrensburg on Saturday, September 14th

Fall 2013

at 6:00. We have reserved the banquet room and will provide appetizers for all. We anticipate this as a great way for all of our districts’ music teachers, regardless of levels of experience or areas of discipline, to make connections with one another.

Lastly, as the school year is quickly approaching, I’d encourage each of you to work on making and maintaining positive connections with others. Work to create positive connections with your students starting with the first day, and then continuing throughout the school year. Strive to make a positive connection with your administrators and fellow teachers. Most importantly, nurture your connections to others outside the profession – your Family and Friends. The connections we make and maintain provide us with a sense of purpose in our daily lives. It’s my hope that by keeping this in mind, that you will find yourself at the start of another fantastic school year!
