ST. LOUIS SUBURBAN DISTRICT #5 James R. Waechter, MMEA District President

You can get current and updated information regarding St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Association (SLSMEA) activities on our website, www.slsmea.com. Detailed information regarding all honor ensembles and festivals will be posted by September 1. All communication to SLSMEA members is via email. If you are not receiving information, please contact me at jwaechter@ ladueschools.net, so I can add you to our email list.

The majority of the events sponsored by SLSMEA are student centered.

These include the honor ensembles

which comprise the top student musicians from member schools. In January and February, guest clinicians rehearse and perform with these groups. SLSMEA also sponsors and organizes festivals for solo, small, and large ensemble contests at the middle, junior high, and high school level in both instrumental and choral areas.

Thanks to the

dedication and organization of our festival chair, Jack Scheurer, these events are always a huge success.

This will be my last year as president of SLSMEA and I am pleased that President-Elect Jason Harris, Director of Bands at Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School, will take over the duties. Our goal is to make the transition smooth. We have been putting the finishing touches on a number of initiatives over the past few years, which

“Begin with the End in Mind.” – Stephen Covey Ready? Set? Reflect. The 2013-14 school year is upon us. And before we begin the day-to-day adventure that is music education, use this wonderful opportunity to reflect upon past experience and set goals for the future. In, “The

I invite all of our members to become more actively involved in SLSMEA by volunteering their time, suggesting ideas, attending honor group rehearsals, or running for office.

CENTRAL DISTRICT #6 Linda Krueger, MMEA District President

Oh, how quickly the summer goes…it is time to begin the new school year. I hope that everyone has had some time to relax and recharge for the most important task ahead. I was once given a coffee mug that said, “Those who can, TEACH. Those who can’t, go into some less significant line of work.” I do believe that teaching is one of the most significant professions a person can be called to do. Each and every day, in our classrooms, we have the opportunity to shape the lives of our students and by doing so, shape the direction of our future. We should make our classrooms a welcoming and safe place as well as one that challenges our students to be their very best. We must then, offer them our best as well. I hope as we step into our classrooms we continue to value each day and each life we touch as a part of this wonderful profession.

The fall meeting of the Central District was held at Linn High School on Monday, August 26. We had the officer’s meeting at 6:00 followed by a dinner (approximately 6:30) and general meeting. Thank you for your attendance and for passing district information along to all music professionals in your school.
