TRI-M NEWS...

Tri-M Advisors - You HAVE Been HEARD! Cathy Coonis, MMEA Tri-M Chair

I have some pretty exciting news!

Patrick Barnett, our national Tri-M chair, has been listening to your concerns and advocating for us with NAfME! Now it will be easier for you and your Tri-M chapter to advocate for music education and for your school’s music department in your school and community!

One huge concern has been the cost of activating a Tri-M chapter. It was $100, regardless of the size of your school or chapter. Thanks to Patrick, a new fee schedule has been approved! There are 4 levels based on school size (i.e. size of the high school for high school chapters, size of the middle school / jr. high for those chapters):

• Level A (enrollment less than 500) =$50

• Level B (enrollment 500-999) =$75

• Level C (enrollment 1,000- 1,999) =$100

• Level D (enrollment 2,000 and up) =$125

Chapter activation runs from June- June. No matter what date you activate your chapter, it will only remain active until the following June 30. For example, if you renew on May 1, 2014, your chapter will be due for renewal on June 30, 2014. So, the earlier you activate your chapter, the more “bang for your buck”! Keep in mind that only active chapters may order supplies from the Tri-M catalog, so you must have activated your chapter before you can order membership cards, pins, honor cords and other supplies to

honor your Tri-M graduates, etc. The catalog on the NAfME.org website is a few years old. The good news is that the prices are the same! The prices haven’t gone up in the last few years. How often can you say that?

Also on the NAfME.org website, you will find the Tri-M manual. It is currently going under revision and updates, so watch for the new and improved model soon.

The NAfME.org website has become a terrific resource, thanks to Patrick, Leah Arceneaux (program manager) and the rest of the folks at NAfME. Patrick and Leah have put together an extremely helpful video called, “We Started a Tri-M Chapter. Now what?”. It features great advice and helpful information from Patrick and Leah, and comments from Patrick’s Tri-M officers concerning the duties of each specific office and the activities their chapter has been involved with or has sponsored. I don’t mind telling you that I will use much of the information I learned from them and will share parts of the video with my Tri-M officers! If you are a new Tri-M advisor, would like to start a chapter, or even if you’ve been an advisor for a while, WATCH THIS VIDEO! I promise, you’ll be glad you did!

You can get to the video in a couple of ways. If you go to the NAfME website, click on “For Music Educators”. From there, click on “Interest Areas” and then, “Music Honor Society Chairpersons (Tri-M)”. On that page, you will

find links to the “Tri-M Forum” and the “Tri-M main page” (as well as Patrick’s Tri-M blog and some great information).

The Tri-M main page link will take you to the main page where you’ll find the video. It also has a “Tri-M for Teachers” link and a “Tri-M for Students” link that will take you to a lot of helpful information. In addition to what I mentioned before, the video will show you how to find everything you need on the website. One of the great things Patrick has added is a list of possible activities that he keeps updating. You’ll be able to find a bunch of great ideas for your chapter!

You can also get to the video (and Tri-M main page) by going to musiced.nafme.org/tri-m. You can get to the Tri-M forum by going to musiced.nafme.org/forums.

In case you haven’t seen it, there is a Tri-M Facebook page you can find at facebook.com/TriMHQ. You are able to make contact with other advisors to share questions and ideas. Students can also access this page to share ideas and activities.

I am looking forward to adding some new ideas this fall. I plan to use one of the ideas I learned at our Tri-M Panel Discussion at MMEA and add a “Social Chair” office to our Tri-M officers to plan fun activities for our music department. I would also like to see if our Tri-M would like to sponsor a mixer for Tri-M chapters in our surrounding area so we can get to know each other and share ideas
