Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” Stephen Covey’s second habit is to “begin with the end in mind.” If you could choreograph the perfect school year, what would it look like? What are your professional goals? What are your goals for the children in your program? What steps do you need to take to ‘make it happen?’ I encourage you to reach out to colleagues and build strong relationships with other music teachers. Beg, borrow, and steal ideas from other highly effective people, because we are all in this together working to improve music education for the sake of all students everywhere.

Congratulations to the Mineral Area College “KICKS” Band, under the direction of Dan Schuncks, for being selected to perform at the 76th

Conference. We look forward to hearing this swingin’ group!

As we start the new school year, we often need reminding of district dates and events. Please consult the district website for the most up-to-date information, dates, and forms. The website address is: http://www.eastcentral7.org. Throughout the year, if you have comments or suggestions for East Central MMEA activities, please feel free to contact me or any other officer with your ideas. We are continually trying to improve the way we function within our organization and make a positive impact on music education in our area. All of our contact information is on the website.

Ready? Set? GO!

Fall 2013 31 MMEA In-Service Workshop/

Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Belva Prather, Associate Director of Bands at Missouri State University. Dr. Prather was recently inducted into the Missouri Band Masters Hall of Fame at this summer’s convention. It is always inspiring to have distinguished educators like Dr. Prather teaching in our district.

I hope you made plans to join us for our annual summer business meeting on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Parkview High School in Springfield. Our meeting began at 9:00 am, with a light breakfast served at 8:30 am. Breakout sessions followed the general meeting, including a discussion for new teachers in our district. We elected new district officers for the 2014-16 term at this meeting. Visit www.scmmea.com for more information.

We are proud to have two individuals from our district as nominees for MMEA State Vice-President Officers. Curtis Tipton is nominated for Band Vice-President, and Alberta Smith has been nominated for Choral Vice-President.

Band Directors please be advised that due to a vacancy in the District Jazz Band Vice-Presidents Office, the SCMMEA Board of Directors has appointed Curtis Tipton to fill this vacancy. Please contact Curtis Tipton should you have any questions about the district jazz band.

Please remember that per our vote at the August 2012 district meeting, all previous year’s entry fees must be paid in full to be eligible to register and participate in district level events. This is by school (not district) and by event. Please contact our district treasurer Cathy Coonis to arrange for payments if you have not paid in full.

The SCMMEA website has been updated. Please visit the website at www.scmmea.com and register your email address as a subscriber to our page. You will automatically receive email updates when the page is updated. Thanks to Steve McClard from Bolivar High School for updating our website.

I wish you the best of luck for an outstanding school year, and I encourage you to take an active role in our district and state events this upcoming year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance.
