Danniels with a laugh. “It’s always worked and it always will. As long as it’s well maintained, it won’t let you down.” He admits that it isn’t necessar-

ily the most popular equipment at his club, “but it’s a workhorse and it serves our members well.” Plate loaded equipment is a good

choice for just about every fitness club, says Gram Garritty, service manager at Calgary’s Apple Fitness Store. Here are five reasons to consider adding it to your gym floor.

1. It’s super-low maintenance. “It

just needs a regular visual inspection to check that the bolts are tight,” says Garritty. “It has no cables, so it’s even lower maintenance than selectorized equipment.” The bearings are industri- al size so they rarely wear out, and it’s a basic stationary piece with just one or a few pivot points. However, like any piece of equipment, the upholstery will eventually need replacing due to wear and tear.

2. It’s rugged and long lasting.

What’s its life expectance? “Basically as long as you as you want it to be,” says Garritty. When pieces start to look dated, some facilities have them re-powdercoated and reupholstered. The advantage of replacing the equip- ment, says Garritty, is that every

few years equipment manufactur- ers tweak the styling and ergonomics improving, for example, the lumbar support or changing a pivot point by a few degrees. Some facilities that do a full equipment upgrade will replace their older plate loaded pieces so that all their equipment matches in terms of styling.

3. It’s cost effective. If you’re up-

grading, you’ll have plenty of Olympic weights already, so you’ll pay for just the frame and not the weight stack.

4. It works for everyone. Men and

experienced lifters tend to gravitate to the plate loaded pieces, but it can ac- commodate all types of users. “I find that nine out of 10 plate-loaded users are male,” says Garritty. “But the horn that holds the plates is Olympic size, so even a 2.5 pound plate fits on.” Some people do find it intimidating, he ad- mits, and find it easier to pull a pin on a selectorized piece or grab a pair of dumbbells.

5. People like it. It’s a personal pref-

erence for many exercisers, especially those who lift ultra-heavy weight. “It’s smoother, and I feel like I have more control,” says Garritty, who enjoys us- ing plate loaded equipment for many of his own workouts.
