How Canadian Colin Milner is helping change the way the world is aging.

O reality.

Birth of an industry Together with its partners and com-

munity of 9,200 members, ICAA has created the active aging industry. The active aging industry includes a wide range of groups, from fitness centres and YMCAs, to seniors centres and re- tirement communities built by real es- tate developers.

24 Fitness Business Canada March/April 2013 In the past, government- and grant-

funded organizations such as seniors centres would rarely have contact with real estate developers. In today’s world, where the benefits of older adult well- ness are finally getting attention, these groups belong to the spectrum of busi- nesses providing fitness and wellness

ctober 1, 2001, was not an auspicious time to launch a new enterprise. The world was absorbed in the aſtermath of 9/11, and active aging, a still-emerging concept, must have seemed an

insignificant issue to most people on that International Day of Older Persons. Yet that was the launch date for the International Council

on Active Aging (ICAA), an organization with the loſty vision of “changing the way we age.” When founder and CEO Colin Milner started ICAA 11 years

ago, he viewed it as a way to unif sectors that serve older adults and “to create an industry dedicated to better health, wellness and quality of life for this age group.” The intervening years have seen this dream become a

products and services for adults over 50. Out front as industry cheerleader

and visionary, Milner has spread the message of active aging and its ben- efits for an aging population, talk- ing to thousands of organizations, governments, media and older adults worldwide. Examples include IHRSA, canfitpro, the World Congress on Active Aging, and the recent meeting of European Union Sport Ministers in Cyprus. In recognition of his innovative

thinking, Milner was invited to partici- pate in the World Economic Forum’s Network of Global Agenda Councils in 2008 and has been invited back every year since. Each of the network’s 70+ councils brings together 15-20 interna- tional experts to capture the very best knowledge on key issues. These coun- cils also advise the Forum, govern- ments and international organizations. In 2010 canfitpro recognized Milner

for his efforts to change the way we age by awarding him with its “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Yet both he and ICAA are just getting started, accord- ing to Milner. “We have a long way to go before so-

ciety and industry embrace the aging process and the wisdom and vitality that can come with it,” he says.
