Hall in New York. I was quite fond of traditional Korean and Chinese folk dances, but I had never seen Chinese classical dance in pure form done in such a large scale. Everything was magnificent: the music, choreography, costumes, etc. I told myself, this is the company to which I would not mind dedicating my entire dance career.
5. What differences are there in the style you perform currently at Shen Yun and your studies at Point Park and NYU? Shen Yun is a Classical Chinese dance and music company. Classical Chinese dance is a complete system of performing arts that represents the entire Asian region. Many Asian ethic and folk dances have similarities in rhythm, movements and postures. They strongly emphasize breathing, regulation of energy and the seamless connections from one movement to another. Chinese classical dance also incorporates many difficult flips and other tumbling movements, techniques that originated in China. On the other hand Ballet is the "bread and butter" of western dance form. Many dance forms either originated or evolved from ballet. Classical ballet is very technical and each movement is very expressive. They strongly emphasize angle, position of the body,
right use of muscles, musicality and acting skills. Both are great art forms in different ways. Yet they do share some similarities.
6. We are intrigued in the intricate details of your preparation. Describe your thought process as you prepare for your performances. First I make sure I am physically warmed up and all my movements are solid. Some of the movements are quite difficult and may cause injuries if performed poorly. So 30 minutes before the show, I have to make sure I am 100% confident with all my movements, choreography, spacing and other external factors. Then, I calm myself down by emptying all my unnecessary thoughts and putting my personal belongings aside. I make sure all my costumes and props are in place since we do have many quick changes. When I perform, I try to give the audience the best performance by doing my part without getting excessively confident. Since most of the audience only get to see the show once, as an artist my only hope is for them to experience the most valuable two hours of their life.
