Madness head for Chepstow
Following their sold out 2012 arena tour, British pop legends Madness have confi rmed they will be playing live at Chepstow Racecourse this summer. The band will perform after a day of racing on Friday June
14. The Chepstow event is their only show in Wales and the South West this summer. Madness are renowned for their high energy live shows
and their love of British tradition, so what better summer venue to play than a racecourse. The band said: “A day at the races, British summer time,
sounds suitably nutty to us!” Phil Bell, executive director at Chepstow Racecourse,
said: “We are delighted we have secured Madness to play here. The band is a national treasure, their songs span the last three decades and they will attract a huge audience. “The combination of live racing and music has proved a
massive hit in recent years on Britain’s racecourses and we are looking forward to a fantastic evening of entertainment for customers of all ages.” Tickets are priced £37 and are available at
www.chepstow-racecourse.co.uk. For customers aged 17 or under, tickets are priced at £10 but must be booked over the telephone by calling 01291 622260. ID must also be produced on the night. Children aged four and under are admitted free.
Events hail ‘forgott en’ scientist
A 19th century British scientist born at Llanbadoc near Usk in 1823, who was famous for being the ‘forgotten’ father of evolution, has been remembered in a series of events at London’s Natural History museum. Alfred Russel Wallace
co-discovered the theory of natural selection, but unlike his contemporary Charles Darwin never became a household name. Both he and Darwin
shared authorship of the scientifi c article which
fi rst proposed the theory in 1858. A year later, Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species came out and secured a place in history. The Natural History
Museum’s Wallace 100 programme was organised to mark the centenary of his death in 1913 and put the biologist back in the spotlight. It began when comedian
and naturalist Bill Bailey unveiled a portrait of Wallace in the museum’s Central Hall.
DEVAUDEN 10K RACE SET FOR MAY DAY
The Devauden 10K challenge, a runaway success in its fi rst outing last year, is taking place again on May Day Bank Holiday Monday. As well as the main race for anyone
over 15, there will also be a 3K race for nine to 11 year olds and and 12 to 14 year olds, and short races around the village hall playing fi eld for those under eight on May 6. In 2012 237 competitors braved the
rain to compete around the tracks and paths of Chepstow Park Woods, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Peter Ward of Llanishen, won last
year’s 10K race in 38 minutes 47 seconds,
TV’s Kate Humble gets green light for skills centre
TV presenter Kate Humble’s project to create a centre of excellence for rural skills ‘could put Monmouthshire on the map’, councillors were told. Monmouthshire County Council’s
planning committee agreed converting redundant agricultural buildings at Upper Meend Farm, near Penallt, for such an educational use could benefit the economy. The council still owns 30 per cent
of the working farm, according to head of planning George Ashworth, who was delighted councillors gave the plans the green light. He said: “The council is keen to see it happen. It might put

Springwatch and is president of the RSPB, has permission for facilities in the buildings, including a lecture room, kitchen and dining area. The application states one day
