A LOCAL amateur dramatics group has become the first to tread the boards at the county’s new £15.2million theatre. The Friendship Theatre Group
opened the show at Ffwrnes, one of the most anticipated developments in Llanelli’s new-look town centre. Located alongside the new East Gate development, the state-of-the-art regional theatre and arts venue occupies a prominent position in the heart of the town’s regenerated cultural quarter. The theatre fuses old and new - a
stunning auditorium, seating up to 500 people, is housed in a newly- built and contemporary building, designed to adapt for a range of performances,
events and
conferences, with additional studio space, a modern Box Office, café and bar. This is linked to Stiwdio Stepni, a more intimate theatre space seating up to 100, accommodated in the grade II listed former Zion Chapel and Old Sunday School buildings which have been restored to complement the modern exterior of the Ffwrnes. Speaking at the launch, council
Leader, Cllr Kevin Madge, said: “Part of the chapel is 100 years old this year – our forefathers had a vision, and if they could see what we achieved today, they would say that
we also have a vision.” Ffwrnes has received funding from
the European Regional Development Fund, Targeted Match Fund through the Welsh
Government,
Carmarthenshire County Council and University of Wales Trinity St David. It is one of the latest projects to slot
in to place in the £60million regeneration of Llanelli Town Centre. The £25million East Gate development, which houses Odeon and a range of family restaurants, and the £3.5million refurbishment of Llanelli Library are already open.
Still to come is the £6million regeneration of Llanelly House and the
£10.5million
Young carers were amongst the guests at the launch of Ffwrnes on January 4. They attended with support workers from Barnardos Cymru, and are pictured outside the theatre’s prominent façade.
