Farmers can sign up to get info on agri-crime

FARMERS in Carmarthenshire are being urged to join an information sharing scheme being run by Dyfed Powys Police to help prevent them becoming victims of agri-crime. Farmwatch is part of the Online

Watch Link, or Owl, set up by the force which allows messages to be passed on to people who have opted to sign up to the scheme. “Farmwatch entails linking up with

farmers in the local community either via email or text and send them information that we feel they need to know,” said PCSO Martin Dickenson. “So for example, if we’re seeing a spate of diesel or oil thefts, or theft of scrap metal which are specifically targeting the agricultural community then we can share this information with those that we think need to know on a quick basis.

“Owl enables us to send messages

out in two ways. If we have an information message we can send that out via email. We understand that farmers don’t check their emails on a regular basis but an information message is non-urgent and is just for record purposes. “If we have a mobile phone number

Start 2B Smart campaign

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council has launched a new internal campaign, Start 2B Smart, to reduce its carbon footprint. The sustainability campaign will target office-based staff and will focus on

three areas – energy, waste and transport. It aims to encourage changes in the workplace that will lead to reduced energy use, waste generation, and travel. Assistant Chief Executive Chris Burns said: “In the last year alone we’ve

managed to cut our energy consumption by 17 per cent, our business mileage by nine per cent and our fleet mileage by 11 per cent, saving us almost five tonnes of CO2 and £450,000. “I know many staff already

take part by recycling waste, switching off PCs

monitors, and cycling to work. This is all great and we need to do more to help drive down our carbon footprint

- small changes can have a big impact.” University programme

A VOCATIONAL student has been presented with a prize from Swansea University as he was named the highest scoring student on a summer university computer science programme. Tee-Jay Dack, an Extended Diploma student in IT, took part in the

university’s summer programme graduation ceremony where he was awarded £50, a certificate and a trophy. Traditionally, A-Level study is perceived as the organic transition to university, but vocational study is increasingly used as a successful and subject-focussed route to higher education.

Children in need money raised by fire fighters

Watch Manager, Nigel James, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who donated to this wonderful cause. £3,000 is a really fantastic amount. It never fails to amaze me how generous the public are in giving to this great cause.”
