Opening the doors to community campus

THE University of Wales Trinity Saint David campus in Carmarthen is available for community use, from being able to enjoy more sport, attend a talk or a concert or hire one of the many rooms for a function. Eleri Beynon, Head of Marketing,

said: “We deliver and promote a wide range of arts events across various venues at both campuses of the University. The events are broadly divided into the areas of seminars, workshops, performances,

live

literature and music. They showcase work by visiting professionals and University staff and students.”

BEAUTY therapy students at Coleg Sir Gâr are training for two new treatments being introduced at the college’s Graig campus. Thai massage and microdermabrasion are being

added to the college’s current treatments to broaden the learning opportunities of its students that leave college to work as beauty or holistic

therapists. “Thai massage, known as Nuad Bo Rarn, meaning sacred touch, uses passive yoga stretching,” says beauty therapy lecturer Francesca Hampson. “It uses pressure and compression techniques to de-stress and reduce muscular tension. Microdermabrasion is a facial treatment that uses fine crystals to remove the top layer of

skin which is effective in improving the appearance of fine lines, scars and areas of pigmentation.” Contact the beauty therapy team on 01554 748079 or email enquiries@colegsirgar.ac.uk

NEW bilingual leaflets, guides and DVDs are just some of the materials now available to help orthopaedic staff inform and educate Hywel Dda patients about their treatment and recovery. The

JointPathways Patient

Education Programme, launched at Prince Philip Hospital, is unique to Wales. The orthopaedic team at the Llanelli hospital has worked closely with programme owner Stryker to develop materials to meet the needs of patients and the team in

Carmarthenshire. Over 70 per cent of patients cared

for by the team state Welsh as their first language.

Ensuring the

educational materials available before and after a procedure were available bilingually was a high priority for Michelle Gerard-Wilson, Orthopaedic Specialist Nurse at Prince Philip Hospital. She said: “It’s fantastic that our

patients receiving a planned hip or knee replacement now have access to these materials in the language of

their choice. We have worked hard to ensure this material is meaningful for staff and patients. “From Outpatient appointments to

post-operation, we have streamlined the information available to help people understand about

the

procedure and what to expect. Following their operation all patients will have an easy to follow check list to help them recover and reassure them of their progress.”
