The Central Scotland Green

Network aims to stimulate a strong green industry

WHAT ABOUT THE GREEN ECONOMY?

E

urope’s largest greenspace initiative, the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), is

investigating how many green jobs there are across the Central Belt and what industries these are based in. Covering some 70 per cent

of Scotland’s population, the CSGN is one of the 14 national developments in the National Planning Framework established to support the economic recovery, improve quality of life and promote sustainable development. Te Network will stimulate a

strong ‘green industry’ sector to be developed across the Central Belt. It will achieve this by atracting businesses to the area, increasing levels of economic activity, creativity, competitiveness and employment. In this manner, it

will help to transform Central Scotland into a place where the environment adds value to the economy and where people’s lives are enriched by its quality. Te CSGN’s workplan

includes addressing vacant and derelict land, generating training and employment opportunities, and demonstrating how businesses can help to make the CSGN a reality by developing products

and amenities for a greener environment. Filling gaps in information is

another key activity and, as such, the CSGN commissioned a study which will lead to a definition of ‘green’ or ‘low carbon’ jobs. Tis work will quantify the number of Scotish and CSGN employees in this ‘sector’. Using this data, CSGN will investigate how ‘green jobs’ have been affected in the

economic downturn, examine the number and type of hidden ‘green jobs’ within firms, and explore opportunities for growth in this area from environmentally based activities, goods and services. Recognising that the

terminology used in this field of research can be off-puting, the CSGN recently held a workshop facilitated by leading academics within the University of Glasgow to develop an agreed understanding as to what a ‘green job’ is. Te results and next steps will be published in the near future.
