is the preferred developer for the new building. Te project is worth about £80m, with
ScotishPower agreeing a 25-year lease agreement to occupy the new complex. Te energy firm already owns the land.
Fastlink
Plans have been unveiled for a new £40 million bus link to serve Glasgow, aiming for a completion date of 2015. An ultra modern bus operation is to link
Glasgow city centre with the SECC and the new Southern General Hospital. Te Scotish Government will contribute £40m to fund it. Fastlink-branded buses will also have
smartcard technology as standard with the intention of linking up with the planned Glasgow Subway smartcard technology.
The Hydro
Te Hydro, which is designed by Foster + Partners and will open in September 2013, is a purpose-built, 12,000-capacity entertainment arena being constructed by Lend Lease. It will play host to about 140 events each year, and has the potential to inject an additional £131 million into the local economy. It will add to the SECC’s events portfolio, and be in the top five busiest indoor entertainment arenas in the world, alongside such venues as Madison Square Garden in New York and Te O2 in
London. It will also be a venue during the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, playing host to the Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic) and Netball (finals) competitions.
Atlas Development
Te £70m Atlas site at the top of Buchanan Street is quickly moving towards completion,
Glasgow School of Art
with the development housing nine new retail stores and 49 apartments, as well as an eagerly anticipated roof garden. Units are nearly fully pre-let and on schedule for opening in March 2013. Owned by Land Securities, the project is being constructed by Balfour Beaty. Forever 21 will open a flagship store joined by other new retailers such as Paperchase and Skechers.
