George Square Renovation plans progress
Plans continue to progress for the renovation of Glasgow’s premier public space, George Square. Earlier in the year an international design competition was held to find a vision for the square that would meet the expectations of Glasgow’s businesses, citizens and tourists. More than 100 firms from across
the world have bid to redesign the square, with entries closing on 26 October. The second phase of the
consultation will take place during December, and will involve asking the public and stakeholders about the designs which are shortlisted from the initial submissions. Your Chamber is assisting the
Council in the development of the proposals by engaging both with businesses in the immediate vicinity, and the wider business community, to discuss the issues they currently have with the square, and their priorities and aspirations for the redeveloped space. This process has taken place
across a number of channels, including an online survey, a Twitter debate event, the Future for Glasgow City Centre conference on 25 October and face-to-face meetings between the Glasgow Chamber policy team and stakeholders. Your Chamber welcomes the

New routes launched
Flights Jet2 has announced three new routes to Glasgow Airport which could create more than 50 jobs at the hub. The budget airline has added
Murcia in Spain, Pula in Croatia, and the Balearic island of Menorca to its 2013 schedule. Steve Heapy, Managing Director
of Jet2holidays, said: “Glasgow is an important base for us and adding our fourth dedicated aircraft is also great news for the area.”

centre asset and the opportunities this brings. While the consultation process is ongoing, we will not be stating a formal opinion on specific aspects of the project, such as the status of the statues. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce
Chief Executive Stuart Patrick, who sits on the George Square Project Board, said: “The Square is the civic heart of Glasgow and is
of paramount importance when it comes to showcasing all this grand city has to offer. “Glaswegians are proud of it,
quite rightly so, and visitors to our city marvel at it, but the time is right to examine what we want from George Square in the future and how we want it to remain the focal point of Scotland’s largest city for years to come.”
Investments Glasgow-based “business angel” syndicate, Kelvin Capital, is set to invest £3 million in eight new Scottish businesses. The group, which was co-founded
by John McNicol and Jim Hall in 2009, finalised two deals in September 2012 and has another six due for completion by January 2013. Kelvin specialises in early stage
investment into Scottish innovations, which benefits from tax breaks under the Enterprise Investment Scheme.
Week of events explores social media’s potential
Glasgow played host to its second Social Media Week from 24 to 28 September. More than 100 events took place and over 1,500 delegates attended. Social Media Week is
an international, crowd- sourced conference
that takes place twice a year in cities across the globe.
September’s event was held in 14 cities. The events collectively explore the economic, social and cultural impact of social media.
Your Chamber also played its part
in the programme, hosting an event in Hummingbird under the title of ‘A Blether, a Bite and a Beer’. The event involved a lively discussion on the next big thing in social media. A range of speakers put their ideas to an audience of 80 and the floor was then opened, generating an interesting selection of ideas, thoughts and arguments. Speaking about the event,
Glasgow Chamber Events and Online Co-ordinator Simon Gwynn said: “Social media has become an
ingrained and essential part of the ever expanding toolkit available to business. It has the potential to help them to trade, save and grow. “Events like Social Media week
allow practitioners to share ideas on technique, theory and day to day practice of using social media for commerce and trade. With such a varied selection of activities taking place over the last week, everyone at the Chamber was hugely impressed with this year’s line up and is very much looking forward to programme for 2013.”
