Christmas brings footfall gift for St Enoch Centre

t Enoch Centre is preparing to celebrate its busiest year yet. Despite the difficult economic


conditions, footfall at St Enoch has risen by at least five per cent to date this year, compared with 2011, when footfall increased to more than 19 million following the completion of a £150 million redevelopment programme. “It has been a challenging year


for the retail sector, but we have gone from strength to strength since investing £150 million in transforming the centre,” Susan Nicol, General Manager of St Enoch Centre, said. “Although it was wonderful to be able to announce a 17 per cent


surge in footfall last year, geting people through the door aſter our redevelopment was in some ways the easy part. Te hard part was retaining those shoppers and atracting even more people to the centre. I’m proud that we have been able to achieve that goal.” Tis year, the centre unveiled


a bumper festive programme, including the introduction of its first Santa’s Groto. Together with Hamleys and Glasgow City Council, the mall also helped to stage Glasgow’s first Style Mile Christmas parade, featuring popular children’s characters including Father Christmas. Te Christmas programme is


part of St Enoch’s renewed focus on the customer experience. Since

the physical regeneration of the centre, the shopping destination has sought to invest in services that will atract visitors. Among the measures which have been implemented are celebrity book signings, such as by Olly Murs and Nigella Lawson and the construction of a new children’s play area above the Food Court. Te centre also continues to


atract new retailers, including independent fashion chain à bientôt, contemporary stationers Drewdle and giſts and greeting cards specialists Papyrus, which is trading from a pop-up store. Fiona Fabien, owner of


Papyrus, said: “Aſter being away from the city centre for some time, we are delighted to be back in the heart of Glasgow. “We expect to benefit from a


healthy footfall at St Enoch as we will be close to some exciting new retailers and a number of established family-friendly brands, including Hamleys, Disney Store and Boots.” Susan added: “Over the last


couple of years we have worked hard to achieve an innovative retail mix and offer added value to our shoppers, whether they are visiting for the first time or rediscovering us aſter our redevelopment. “Te success we have


enjoyed as a result has helped to regenerate the city and bring new opportunities to those in the surrounding locality.”
