Cream always rises to the top and Dubai managed to do it again in 2012. The destination started the year with a flourish attaining occupancies and hotel revenues that placed it second only to Paris and the successes continue. As I write the welcome for the 15th
annual
edition of meetdubai, Dubai is on track for a record 10 million hotel guests at the end of the year. An incredible statistic when you consider that the emirate is home to only two million residents.
The year 2013 looks to be an important one for Dubai as it seeks to consoli-
date its position as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations. Its airline, Emirates, is lending a helping hand, literally bringing the world to Dubai with more than 15 new routes added in the last year serviced by almost 200 aircraft and with another 90 on order. Development of the hospitality sector may have slowed from its peak a few
years ago as the city matures, but the next year will still welcome some key new properties. The JW Marriott Marquis opens its doors for the first time before the end of 2012, the Conrad Dubai will also welcome guests in the second quarter of 2013 and The Oberoi Dubai, Sofitel Dubai Palm Jumeirah Resort & Spa and Dubai Marriott Hotel Healthcare City will be making their debuts. There was concern that European visitor numbers would dwindle in
the face of economic uncertainty, but numbers are up – not as much as for the Arab and Chinese guests, though, who have been arriving in droves throughout the year and also Russians who benefit from the same time zone and a mere five-hour commute. The pace of Dubai’s development paves the way for a dynamic meeting
and event industry with a packed line-up in 2013 and beyond. Inside this guide, planners will find everything they need to create a successful event, including a comprehensive look at hotel venues and popular incentives. We look forward to meeting you in Dubai.
