The past and the present

Stroll through a bygone era and sample the wonders of old Dubai’s souks and the majesty of its museums and architecture

BASTAKIYA The old Bastakiya quarter, on the shores of Bur Dubai, offers a glimpse of old Dubai with its proliferation of narrow lanes and traditional courtyard houses. Today, Bastakiya provides a bustling market in the cooler winter months and a cultural centre to Dubai. It is perfect for walking tours, incorporating intriguing museums, art galleries and shops. Here, you’ll also find traditional shopping in the form of tailors, cobblers, spice shops and the occasional token gift shop, lining the streets. In the souks, bartering for a good price is now a novelty, but was once a way of life. Further up the Creek, located

Saeed Al Maktoum serves as a local museum, housing a rare collection of historic photographs, coins, stamps and documents that record Dubai’s history.
