MEETINGS AND EVENTS WILL BE A KEY FEATURE OF UPCOMING PROPERTIES SUCH AS JW MARRIOTT MARQUIS HOTEL DUBAI AND THE CONRAD DUBAI


THE BIG ONES Shaping up to radically boost Dubai’s credentials in the meeting and event sector are two major openings in 2012 and 2013 when the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai and the Conrad Dubai open on the Sheikh Zayed Road. The JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai


will take the title of world’s tallest dedicated hotel building at 355 metres and features two towers with 804 rooms each, the first of which is scheduled for a late 2012 opening following by its twin in 2013. The Marquis endorsement is reserved for iconic properties in the Marriott International portfolio, defined by their scale, grandeur and location and the new hotel will be the first such JW branded property outside the US. Meetings and events are a key feature of


the hotel and management is particularly targeting groups, conferences and conventions of up to 1,000, where delegates can sleep, meet and dine under one roof, in one location – a facility not available in Dubai until now, they claim. As well as more than 5,000 square metres of event space, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai will also have nine restaurants and five lounges, along with a spa, health club and two ballrooms. Closer to the Dubai World Trade


Centre, the Conrad is also geared for a later 2012 opening and features 559


rooms as well as a impressive total of 30 meeting rooms, two ballrooms with capacity for 1,100 and between 500 and 800 as well as five restaurants and bars, a spa and health club and outdoor pool. Another major project is the Sheraton


Dubai Sheikh Zayed Road, a flagship property for Starwood that will encompass 480 rooms and 180 apartments as well as extensive meeting space. The hotel will open early in 2014, along with a 180-room Aloft at Mall of the Emirates. Accor too has a major development


on the arterial Sheikh Zayed Road, with a 350-room Sofitel hotel scheduled to open in 2013, following the opening of a 354-room Pullman at Jumeirah Lakes Towers, full renovation and relaunch of the 318-room Pullman Deira City Centre and a new Novotel in Al Barsha with 466 rooms – while Marriott has two additional hotels launching in Healthcare City, one of which is a 352-room hotel. In DIFC, Rosewood has a 250-room


property under construction scheduled to open in 2013, with a ballroom and rooftop pool and fitness centre. In Jumeirah Lake Towers, a new Mövenpick will debut with 168 rooms and 307 apartments. The group also has a serviced hotel apartment property with 180 units launching at The Square Dubai near Al Mamzar on the Sharjah border.


Meanwhile, Hilton has introduced its


DoubleTree brand to the city with a 344-room hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai Al Barsha Hotel and Residence and the rebranding of the 174-room former Royal Ascot to the DoubleTree by Hilton Bur Dubai in January 2013. The hotel will see the addition of a conference hall, four meeting rooms, business centre and pool, health club and spa. At the airport, Le Méridien Dubai is add-


ing 197 rooms to bring the hotel inventory up to 580 rooms. In addition, banqueting facilities are being extended with the existing Falcon Ballroom rebuilt to boost capacity to 1,000 while the Great Ballroom will be refurbished. Together the facility will be able to accommodate up to 1,550 guests. Looking further ahead, a whole rede-


velopment of the site of the former Dubai Metropolitan Hotel is underway with Starwood winning the bidding battle with a triple whammy. A 241-room St. Regis, a 384-room W Hotel


and a 966-room Westin will be built on the site of the new Habtoor Palace complex, to include a 1,100-seat theatre, retail and restaurant areas, plus a tennis and sports academy – all set for a 2017 opening.
