The Blue Ribbon Fair Program By Wanda Jones
We all know first hand the effort required to put on a Fair. But
it sure is nice to be recognized for the positive things that you do every year to improve or bring something new to our com- munity. The Blue Ribbon Program began as an idea that would pro-
vide prestige to those Fairs who were selected by their peers as ―outstanding‖ in the industry. A committee has been established to review all the previous
criteria and set new standards and judging formats so that all Fairs who put genuine effort into their concessions, parking, ticketing, midway, displays/exhibits and livestock programs can be properly recognized as the best of the business. It is not the intention to have Fairs compete against Fairs for this distinction but rather to encourage Fairs to use a second set of eyes so that they may improve their Fair. Let’s face it, we walk our own fairgrounds every day so it be-
comes repetitive. We know every inch of the grounds. How- ever, another Fair executive, looking at your layout, signage, etc., may notice even the smallest of things that you have for- gotten or simply not noticed. We encourage Fairs to continue to visit other Fairs and offer feedback on the efforts made toward accommodating Fair guests. Besides, there is no better way to see what the industry has to offer than through a first hand view. Some of the best ideas originated from a visit with an- other Fair. The Blue Ribbon Committee welcomes input on what you’d
like to see included in the program (or what you found to be negative aspects). Please send your comments to Lisa Hinton to be forwarded to the appropriate committee members.
Historical Exhibit Contest Entries are due the first day of the convention in May 2013.
That sounds like a long time from now, but now is the time to get started on the display for your Fair. It is not about how big the display is, it is not about a display of antiques, it is about the history of YOUR Fair. It isn’t even about the contest, the contest was created to encourage you to display your history. Start by writing the history if there isn’t one, if there is, then
start gathering photographs, newspaper articles. Review scrap- books, the secretary’s minute books. Check the archives of your local newspaper for articles, your County Historical Soci- ety, the Chamber of Commerce and talk to the ―old timers.‖ Write an article for the newspaper telling of your project and ask for old photographs or other information. Check with your County government for aerial maps, and other historical data. Your Extension Agent may have valuable information. If you want to include a section on past entertainers and you
don’t have all of the photographs, check their website and print a picture from there. Or ―Google‖ them, the same for people who have been involved in your Fair, past managers, etc. If someone has won a Fair related award ask to borrow the
trophy/plaque to display temporarily. Ask the livestock commit- tee for trophies, ribbons, plaques to display. Chronicle your involvement in the Florida Federation of Fairs and the IAFE with photographs or articles. Display your written history in poster form so it can be easily
read. Remember to follow the guidelines for preserving your mate-
rial as set forth in the article by Susan Sparks in the last issue of The Faircracker. (July 2012). If you can’t find your copy you can get it on our website.
