FAIR TRIP 2012 ……….…………………………………………………… On Sunday, September 30, we traveled to Fryeburg Fair, which

was founded in 1851. When we arrived at the Fair it was raining, but that did not detour us or any of the fairgoers who were follow- ing us in for the opening day activities. One event that was a huge hit with fairgoers and very exciting to watch was the Firemen’s Muster Competition. This was a great fun competition that the fairgoers really enjoyed watching. The Firemen competed in sev- eral events – Dry Hose, Wet Hose, Ball Squirt and 2 Mystery Games. This was a great way to have some fun and show your support for the local firemen. At Fryeburg, we also caught up with the group from Collier

County. Rhonda Ward joined our group back to Portland. That e v e n i n g we went to a light- house on C a p e Elizabeth. It was p i c t u r e p e r f e c t and ex- actly what you pic- tured in your mind that the M a i n e coast l ine

would look like. This was the ending to a wonderful day!!! On Monday, October 1, we headed back south to Massachu-

setts to attend the Topsfield Fair. This Fair offers school field trips for local schools. They had an enormous amount of educational information for them. They had a Teacher Resource Center, where teachers are given a bag full of information on commodity groups and worksheets/activities for the students. We were told that on t h r e e days of the Fair, i n n e r city kids come to the Fair so they c a n l e a r n a b o u t agricul- ture and the Fair s t a f f provides them a

hot dog lunch. They said that they will have over 300 kids a day!! It was evident that educating the public was a top priority to the Topsfield Fair. This year at the Topsfield Fair, a world record pumpkin was on

display. Their Fruit and Vegetable building was so impressive. The 2009 pound pumpkin was on display in the center of the building. The first pumpkin to weigh over a ton and was grown in Green, RI.. It was featured on CBS Sunday morning Oct. 7th. Check our website for the url. All around the display, they had competitive fruits and vegetables. They had the cutest pumpkin decorating contests which were done by individuals of all ages

and by groups as well. This building was so colorful with all the fruits and vegetables. Our last night in Boston was just as

fun as our first night!!! We wanted to see some history so we visited Salem Massachusetts. This was an incredi- ble walk back through time. Our driver, Dan, bravely took us into the craziness of downtown Boston. We made our last stop at the original ―Cheers‖ to eat dinner and celebrate a wonderful trip.

In conclu-

sion, this was a great experience for each person on the trip. I am pretty sure each of us came home with a lot of ideas! I personally took over 750 pic- tures – I am excited to see how we can use some of these ideas at the State Fair. All three Fairs we visited were unique in their own way. But all three were decorated with Fall colors and pumpkins which made the grounds so beautiful and attractive for fairgoers. This trip was a wonderful ex- perience but more importantly, it was educational and really keeps you excited about mak- ing your Fair better!!!
