IAFE ANNOUNCES ―DREAM BIG‖PROGRAM FOR 2013 The IAFE’s 2013 Board Chair, Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe, and her Convention Program Chair, Becky Brashear, let us

know early this year that they had developed not only a ―convention‖ theme for 2013, but wanted our Association to encourage all its members to get involved in a unified service project in 2013. This project would show the world just how important agricultural Fairs are to the community they serve. The 2013 theme will be ―Dream Big‖ and the unified project will be to ask every member Fair to do a food drive during

their 2013 event. As an example of the power of food drives at Fairs already – The Puyallup Fair raised over 200,000 pounds in one day last week, exceeding their last year amount by 40,000! The LA County Fair, the OC Fair, Alameda Fair, WI State Fair, OH State Fair, MO State Fair, the NC State Fair and dozens of others are similarly generating dona- tions of hundreds of tons of food at their events each year! Now imagine that power magnified hundreds of times over across this continent! With the direction of Marlene and Becky, Steve Siever of our IAFE Staff has already secured Etix as a sponsor to offer

incentives to member Fairs. Each month, January through November, there will be a drawing of all Fairs doing a drive that month, submitting their tallies to our on-line ―can counter‖ – for a prize valued at $500. We believe the positive PR for this project has the potential to be extraordinary for our members and the Association. The notice was mailed the week of September 17 to about 500 Fairs – the ones happening January through May,

2013 – to announce the project. Mailings to the remaining Fairs will be staggered in two additional mail outs, December and February. A web page on our site has information and a link to a Step-By-Step Guide which has been created using some great

tips provided by several Fairs which already do drives. http://www.fairsandexpos.com/events/dreambig/ This link will be under the ―EVENTS‖ ribbon on the home page. NEXT STEPS – near future: One workshop at this year’s Convention will feature some Fairs doing drives, plus a representative from a Las Vegas

food bank to outline the critical issue that over 1 in 6 Americans today is in a hunger crisis. Marlene will announce the theme and the project during her remarks at the closing session of the 2012 Convention. All Fairs will receive information included in the mailing for 2013 dues/directory later this fall All F&E issues, e-newsletters and the Directory will feature on-going content about Dream Big throughout 2013. We will work on the exact details of the editorial content and schedule later this fall.

FIREFIGHTER‘S INDIAN RIVER COUNTY FAIR HAS ―FOOD DRIVE‖ PROGRAM (This is a supplement to the IAFE Dream Big article)

We here at the Firefighters' Indian River County Fair just received the information

about the "Food Drive" program you are trying to encourage all Fairs to participate in. Here at the Firefighters' Fair we have been doing this type of program for 3 years now with a local food bank in our community called "Harvest Food Outreach." We have col- lected over 3 tons of food since its inception. We have even added to the program the last two seasons a clothing drive as well for the local Salvation Army. In both of these weekend events during the Fair, visitors can bring an article of clothing or a non-perishable food item and receive a discounted ride wristband. Our midway pro-

vider Strates Shows and their CEO Jimmy Strates has enjoyed the relationship we both have with these organizations and the community spirit it provides. The Strates family believes in this venture like we do and I am sure we will con- tinue well into the future. The needs are there for our community citizens and we are here to help not just as firefighters but as "Their Fair Family" serving the community.
