The Puff er Bar & Restaurant Easdale Island, Oban
It’s no exaggeration to say community life on the west coast island of Easdale revolves around the Puffer – and much of that is down to owner Keren Cafferty. As well as providing a community hub for the island’s 70 permanent residents, she chairs the island’s charity, Eilean Eisdeal, which aims to create a sustainable future for the island, and runs the museum, community hall, harbour and annual arts programme.

Stephen McDonald Lounge & Room Largs
Stephen McDonald plays down his role in the local community, but there’s plenty to shout about. The Largs operator has run the football team of local primary school St
Joseph’s for nine years. Always willing to allow his venues to be used for free by local groups, Stephen has been a key campaigner in achieving BID (Business Improvement District) status for Largs and was the architect and chief organiser of the inaugural Largs Live music festival this summer.
Martin Young
Mains of Scotstown Inn Bridge of Don, Aberdeen
A staggering community operation is run from Martin Young’s Mains of Scotstown bar and restaurant. As part of the bar’s Community Spirit initiative, chefs this year cooked thousands of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday – enough to feed the residents of nine local sheltered housing sites – while other staff have helped with local maintenance projects and even cut the grass on public grounds.
