46/ SEPTEMBER 2012 THE RIDER Canadian Paso Classic August 5th, 2012, Story and photos by Kelly Bowers.

The Central Canada Paso Fino Horse Associa- tion recently did something they had not done in many years… they hosted a PFHA sanctioned point- ed Paso Fino horse show. This auspicious event occurred on the windy weekend of August 4th- 5th, at the Ancaster Fairgrounds. Early on in the plan- ning, there was speculation about whether they would raise enough money or get enough participation… and the answer to those questions and more was a happy, resounding yes!! Paso Fino fever is alive and well and a fabulous time was had by all. The Canadi- an Paso Classic was launched, succeeded, and promises to return in 2013.

show manager, Shannon Behmann, the weekend had all the ingredients of a great party and show – beautiful horses, friendly people, tasty food and live music. On Saturday night, about 30 horses turned up and filled the barn. A terrific dinner was presented by volunteer/mem- ber Anne Hull, with musical entertainment provided by The Hidalgos. A petite twister sur- prised everyone just as dinner was ending and shredded some tents set up for the camp out - but the party was not to be stopped. The next day, judges arrived, Shaw Laney from South Carolina and Karen Cabic from New York. Throughout the day, they made their placements in over 30 classes, mostly pointed but some un-pointed “fun” class- es like the costume event, as well. Lots of beautiful horses were shown, and many of the exhibitors were excited first- timers with the focus on partici- pation and fun. Horses ranged in age from 3 to 27 years and partic- ipants were from 4 to 79 years old. Now, that’s what I call an all-inclusive event.

The stands were filled with spectators watching classes which included all the regular paso classes, as well as trail, versatili- ty, largo race, champagne class, costume and judge’s request. Kelly Bowers from The Rider attended both days and took 140 photos which can be seen on her Facebook page photo album list- ed below. The arena was busy with lots of great food and prod- ucts from a wonderful variety of vendors, including lovely horse- hair jewelry by Kleio. A silent auction was held for many donat- ed items including art and tack with the lucky winners taking home nice prizes at a good price. There were extra special guests at the Ancaster Paso Fino show. Professional trainer, Jose Lozada, nicknamed “Rodrigo” was there to compete on the weekend (in group photo). He is originally from Puerto Rico and has been living in the US but late- ly, he has been staying and train- ing horses for Hacienda Santa Maria in Schomberg, Ontario. Owner, Dr. Oscar Almao consid- ers Rodrigo to be the secret to his Paso Fino success. With Rodrigo as trainer and rider, Hacienda Santa Maria showed 5 horses tak- ing home 14 ribbons, with 10 firsts including Classic Fino and Mare. Rodrigo will be competing at the US Nationals, then return- ing to Ontario in October. Other special guests were Aleidita and Edgar Ortiz, also seen in the Santa Maria group photo. This couple are great friends of Dr. Oscar Almao and Dr. Janeth Roman and travelled from Ocala, Florida for the Ancaster competition. They are well known breeders of the famous stallion, “Jordon” and another hundred high quality
