MIKEY defibrillators have saved 14 lives since the inception on The Mikey Network in 2003. When administered to a victim within criti- cal minutes of suffering sudden car- diac arrest, MIKEYs can increase the chance of survival up to 75 per cent. The Mikey Network has been

working to create public awareness and provide education about heart healthy lifestyles. To date, over 1,300 MIKEYs have been placed across Canada. The Mikey Network was named for Mike Salem, a valued partner at Heathwood Homes and The Heron Group who experienced sudden cardiac arrest and died on a golf course in 2002.

With MIKEYs now at Win- dReach Farm, emergency care is more accessible to the Farm’s staff, volunteers and visitors.

Unveiling of a Canadian Sports Hero

It was a fitting start to the 2012 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tourna- ment. After decades of international- level sport, ten-time Olympian Ian Millar was awarded a portrait in the Canadian Sports Heroes Collection. Painted by Turner Valley artist Gordon Milne, the collection began in 2002. The collection features 15 of Canada’s greatest sports icons, rang- ing from swimmers to boxers, and now includes an equestrian athlete. After 23 years of partnership with Ian Millar, BMO Financial Group Senior Vice President of the prairies division, Robert Hayes, was on hand to unveil the newest portrait. The portrait wasn’t the only thing BMO Financial Group was sponsoring in Millar’s name. In def- erence to Millar’s dedication to ther- apeutic riding for those with mental and physical disabilities, $10,000 was donated to the Canadian Thera- peutic Riding Association on behalf of Millar; $1,000 for each of his Olympic Team appearances. The ath- lete was thrilled, commenting “I’ve seen the good riding can do for a per- son. Riding can heal, and everyone should have the chance to get on a horse.”

Millar. When asked about how he created the final piece, he replied “You can sense the kind of person people are when you spend time with them. After spending time with Ian, it was clear to me who he was. He

loves his family, he loves his horses. Ian is a man who strives for excel- lence, and expects excellence from those around him.”
