Autumn Adventures - Cyn- thia Armour

Unfortunately the GFHC Skills Ride was rained out. It’s Brock’s and my favourite because he has an opportunity to practice all the tricks he learned as a police horse. In fact, despite his insubordina- tion (which eventually got him fired) he excelled in the obstacle course work and gave the Toronto mounted unit a competitive edge in their equestrian games. We were looking forward to this year’s ride - I wish there were more opportunities to do obstacle courses in Southern Ontario. It’s a great way to build the teamwork between horse and rider.

It’s hard to believe that autumn is here but isn’t it a fabulous time to get out on your steed and enjoy the fresh air. We’ve got two rides

scheduled in October that you won’t want to miss. Please join us in the East Forest of the Ganny on October 7th and 28th.

What better way is there to celebrate the friendships we gain through the Ganaras- ka Forest Horse Club than hacking together on Thanks- giving Sunday? The ride is scheduled early enough in the day that you can come home and still enjoy a feast with the family. You and your horse will feel justified to overindulge because you will both have had your exercise for the day!

Between the two GFHC- sanctioned rides, four of us are going on an adventure with our steeds. We all met through the club and became fast friends. At the fundrais- ing dance last March we chipped in together and pur-

chased a two-night “Bed and Bale” stay at Kendall Hills Farm near Orono, thanks to a generous donation by owners Tim and Frances Tufts. We’ll be sleeping in the self-suffi- cient “Hen House” which is appropriately named consid- ering we’re no longer spring chickens and we cackle a lot! We’ll have an opportunity to explore more of the west side of the Ganaraska Forest over a three day stay.

October 28th is your opportunity to show off your creativity at the second annu- al Halloween Ride. I was away last year but judging from the photos on our web- site, there was a colourful turnout! I’m not convinced I can easily disguise a 17.1, 1800 pound horse but I’m certainly considering what I might wear!

We’re looking forward Calendar of events for GFHC in 2012

New Book: How to Exercise a Thoroughbred Race Horse

Summary

This ebook explains how an exercise rider takes a Thoroughbred race horse to the race track and back safely.

The first few chapters go over being in the barn, saddling and preparing the horse before mounting. Once mounted, it is explained what to do before exiting the barn and heading toward the race track.

The race horse is then followed to the track and various situations are pointed out of which to be aware from an exercise rider’s point-of-view. Once on the track, it is explained how to get the horse to the correct pole at which to begin the gallop.

The remaining chapters follow the same course of what to do, how and why it is done. However, this is not a lesson in how to ride a Thoroughbred race horse.

There are chapters about the other people on the race track and why they are there, such as the hot walkers, the gap attendants, the clockers, the track maintenance crew and others essential to the smooth operation of the race track every morning. Getting a race horse back to the barn from the track after the exercise can be an adventure in itself and this is also explained in detail. Back at the barn, unsaddling is explained, as

is talking to the trainer and preparing to get on your next horse.

Specific ailments of race horses are gone over as well as how the exercise rider handles them when speaking to the trainer about the horse.

Breaking from the gate is explained. Breez- ing and breezing on the turf are covered. The Proper Use of Draw Reins is the only chapter concerning any type of direction about reschooling the race horse.

become a jockey. The last chapter gives advice on how to

OVC Receives Donor Land Gift

Introducing the New 2013 Super Sport Santa Fe Living Quarter Starting at $24,900 for 2 Horse!

The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) is pleased to announce that it has received the generous donation of 300 acres of farmland, woodlands, and wetlands. Located 15 min- utes from the University of Guelph campus, this gift will provide OVC with the opportu- nity to reach its growth and expansion needs for years to come, while offering the greater university a location rich in teaching and research potential.

Future plans for the land may include an equine primary healthcare program focusing on experiential learning. The gift also provides unique opportuni- ties for the university to study and learn from the farm’s diverse ecosystems. OVC will work with campus administra- tors and other colleges to deter- mine when and how to develop the land in a sustainable man- ner, while respecting the donor’s desire to care for the land.
