YOU AND THE RAF

Many issues are common irrespective of where a RAF family might live and the process is also about identifying those common themes and putting together an action plan both to maintain existing provision and to develop opportunities for new and creative ones.

To the casual observer, the CDO’s role might seem narrow but they fulfil a broad range of tasks and are actively networking on behalf of RAF communities to ensure they have access to all the support to which they are entitled. This might involve liaising with the Local Authority, keeping up good relationships with the neighbours through parish councils, schools and other local organisations and working with external bodies to access entitlements detailed within the Armed Forces Covenant.

CDOs support the delivery of many community projects and activities, from deployment support initiatives to family play activities and community allotment projects. They are responsible for managing the RAF Benevolent Fund Airplay project at a local level and for the delivery of youth work and holiday activities.

The Airplay Play Park programme to install new play parks and Multi Use Games Areas across the

country over the last couple of years and delivery of training for volunteers has taken hard work on the part of CDOs. Ongoing work also includes involvement in planning

improvements to community facilities and finding the funding. Importantly CDOs ensure that provision for children, young people and families is operating well and in a way that complies with best

practice, government guidelines and legislation.

The Air Command Community Support Team has recently been out and about meeting with, and advising, Community Support personnel at stations. The two Regional Community Development Advisors are also spending time on the road, supporting Community Development Officers as they identify the needs of the communities they serve and set about prioritising work and planning action over the next year.

By the end of the Summer, all Stations will have completed their Community Needs Analysis. Air Command will then share the findings with the RAF Families Federation. Drawing on information and evidence from other sources, including the Families Federation the Service will then be well placed to develop an overall picture of the community support requirement for the RAF family.
