FEDERATION NEWS

some expressing significant scepticism that the Covenant would make any difference, and others expressing expectations that are probably unachievable giving current resource constraints.

The accompanying graphs and quotes taken from the survey will provide you with an insight into some of the top level findings from this survey. The full report will be published at the end of Jun 12 and will be distributed to key Government and RAF staffs. A copy of the report will be available on the Federation website.

Some of Your thoughts on SDSR: “The government is jaw jaw but not war war.” “Agile, Adaptable and Capable...Cheap, Cheap and Cheaper comes to mind.” “They (the Government) don’t understand that they are in debit in the Bank of Goodwill and that we are about to foreclose.”

“Staff College teaches officers to understand the political element to the global picture but no politician completes a staff course to obtain a coherent grasp of what all three Services can and can’t do, why that is, and the strategic implications of not doing it.”

“They ‘talk the talk’ about support and welfare, however finances and cuts say otherwise.”

“If you move the goalposts any more there won’t be any pitch left.” “How far will successive governments go before we no longer have a viable RAF / Armed Forces?” “Senior officers need to start communicating their medium-term strategy so their staffs have something good to work towards.”

“Short-sighted short-term decisions that will have major long term consequences.”

Some of Your thoughts on the Covenant:

“Meaningless, vacuous propaganda that serves only to satisfy the politicians egos that they’ve done something.” “Since the SFA upgrade programme funding was removed, it proves that the Covenant has no effect and no power in law to protect us.” “A great idea in principle but UK culture is not the same as the USA and we have hidden ‘behind the wire’ too long and have become disassociated from the public at large.”

“I suspect it won’t come to much.” “Likely to fail owing to lack of resources.”

“It contains some interesting and

potentially very encouraging statements.” “This has been poorly publicised.” “Government exercise with too many loop holes for bean counters and self- important people to wriggle out of doing what is right.”

Your next opportunity Our survey is ‘Pay, Pensions & Other Stuff’ and runs online for the 30 days of June. Do go online and have your say on pay, pensions, X factor, allowances, leave and separation. This evidence will be converted into a formal report which the Federation will deliver to the Armed Forces Pay Review Body in October.

Our remit as the independent voice of RAF families is to deliver evidence- based reports to inform and influence current and future policies impacting on family life. We rely on you to give us this evidence as, without you, we have no voice and our reports would be pretty thin and unconvincing. Help us get the key messages evidenced by bringing your concerns to our attention and taking part in our surveys and workshops. We look forward to hearing from you!
