demanding role that differs from any other I have had whilst serving in the RAF. My daily responsibilities are looking after all facets of administration for 130+ RAF personnel; in periods of absence I also deputise for my tri- Service colleagues. It is essential that the pay and movements are correct for all the medical staff whilst serving here. consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeons within the University Hospital Birmingham Trust. The surgical challenges and procedures that my three military colleagues and I perform have expanded from the traditional orthopaedic to embrace techniques from many disciplines. The more extreme patient treatment challenges require flexibility of thought and effort as well as the full support of military and NHS resources. This is essential for best patient care and to satisfy the concerns of the patient’s families, friends, chain of command and many others who are acutely interested in patient progress. Although the majority of injured Service personnel I treat are from field operations, I also assess and look after injured aircrew following ejection or crash. In all cases we aim to give best level of care to the patient maximising the potential for return to active, fulfilling service and social lifestyle”.

I particularly enjoy the diversity and the surprisingly fast pace of the issues which arise each day. The RCDM differs from most other units in that it is a tri-Service establishment applying three different

welfare policies supported by three differing second tier support agencies. The RCDM predominantly uses Substitute Service Accommodation to house its staff and with this comes the responsibility for the day-to- day management of over 200 properties spread across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area.
